Quick answer

Community references agree that rune slots open at hero levels 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65. Set bonuses require 2, 4 or 6 equipped pieces; levelling one rune does not add pieces. Patch 1.0.1 adds tradable Grand skill runes. Read the equip prompt before binding an item you may want to sell.

When do rune slots unlock?

AFK Meta and Wikily list the same six unlock levels. The thresholds below show the earliest capacity for a set bonus, assuming you own the required compatible pieces. Reaching the level does not award a complete set.

401One piece; no two-piece bonus
452Two-piece bonus can fit
503Still below four pieces

Rune level is not set-piece count

A rune can reach rune level 6. That number describes one item, not six equipped set pieces. Check your open slots and equipped set names separately from the level printed on each rune.

Wikily reports that equipped runes below level 6 gain rune XP when the hero receives eligible kill or offline XP. It describes XP-based levelling, not feeding or merging spare runes. This is a community account, not a process tested here.

Official source note

What changed with Grand runes?

The official October 5 patch adds 32 Legendary skill runes with “(Grand)” in their names, eight per class, with stronger stats and skill-level bonuses than their Rare versions. They can be traded on the Auction. A Grand skill rune does not by itself establish that your setup has a complete class set.

Before equipping or selling a rune

Wikily says Set and Grand runes can be traded until equipped, and describes a prompt warning that equipping permanently removes trading eligibility. Rare and Uncommon runes are listed as non-tradable. Treat the current item tooltip and confirmation as the final check.

Patch 1.0.1 adds a selling confirmation for precious tradable runes and commodities, including Sell All. Read that confirmation rather than assuming the bulk action excludes everything valuable.

Our recommendation

A short check before changing your setup

  • Identify the skill or set you actually use, then read the candidate rune’s tooltip.
  • Count equipped matching pieces. Do not budget for a six-piece effect while only two slots are open.
  • Before equipping, decide whether you need to keep the item tradable.
  • Keep the previous setup for comparison. Test one change under the same conditions before selling the old item.

What these sources do not prove

This page does not establish an absolute drop chance, a guaranteed farming route, or the strongest set for every class. AFK Meta flags higher-level rune values as needing an in-game check. We have not tested rune XP, trading or a full build in the current client.
